Tracing Our Steps To The Holy Abode of Mount Kailash
Before signing up for the trekking expedition to Mount Kailash and Mansarovar trek, there were several things that gave me cause to wonder. In the moments when my decision was swirling around the waves of uncertainty, I was confident of rediscovering the most neglected “me” on the journey. With a streak of adventure and a hope for joy, I stepped into the unknown zone to battle against the nightmares of living into a world of constructions.

The trekking journey to Kailash Mansarovar Yatra began once I arrived in Kathmandu, the sprawling capital of Nepal. Situated at an elevation of approximately 1,400 meters, it is located in the bowl-shaped Kathmandu valley, which holds great spiritual significance. According to belief, the valley was formed from the bed of a sacred lake by the deity Manjushri, and it represents the impressive combination of terraced fields and revered temple towns that showcase the skill of Nepal’s architects and artisans. The beauty of the place was incredibly captivating and made me think about the breathtaking natural scenery. Despite feeling tired after such a long trip, I still had a strong desire to explore more of the area. However, my tiredness and weakening stamina made it challenging for me to fully satisfy my curiosity.

The following day, I started my journey by seeking blessings at the Pashupatinath Temple and Budhanilkanth Temple. This was the day when I drove from Kathmandu to Dhunche in order to reach Kyirong. However, my path was blocked by immigration formalities that needed to be completed before proceeding further. Fortunately, I had all the necessary documents which prevented any difficulties and allowed me to enter into these geographical boundaries, untouched by human-made fences. If I were to summarize the experience of traveling through this place, I would say it was a journey of self-reflection. It not only made me aware of the artificial boundaries created by humans, but also provided moments where I could deeply connect with my own fragmented self.

Additionally, I arrived at Dongba, a location of breathtaking beauty that is limitless. It is home to a picturesque sight of the azure lake Pieko-Tso and the awe-inspiring vistas of the Yarlung Zangpo (the Brahmaputra River), providing a unique and unparalleled experience. The stunning mountain landscapes and elevated plateaus intensify the thrill of hiking.

The best part about this location is the highs and lows of this terrain that lead to the sight of an abode of purity, Mansarovar Lake. Nestled in the lap of nature at an altitude of 22,028 ft above sea level, it is the highest freshwater lake in the world. The crystal clear blue water of the lake and its emerald green appearance has never failed to sway the mind of thousands of tourists across the world. The view of such an exceptional beauty of nature gave me a plethora of opportunities to turn into a photographer to create negatives for the moments lived in ecstasy and excitement.

The time has come to begin the trek to Mount Kailash. The first day of the Kailash Parikrama starts at Yama Dwar, which is considered the starting point of the trek. Yama Dwar, also known as the Gates of the Lord of Death, is believed to be the entrance where all mortal attachments must be left behind in order to encounter Lord Shiva, who holds great religious significance. This place is symbolic of truth and represents the spiritual concept of ultimate reality. It also provides the best views of Mount Kailash, a place of immense religious and mythological importance.

Mount Kailash, standing at an impressive height of 21,778 feet, is considered the origin of four significant rivers in Asia: the Brahmaputra, Ganges, Indus, and Sutlej. It symbolizes the saying that the most beautiful views come after the most challenging climbs. When sunlight touches this majestic mountain, the entire area becomes illuminated, offering limitless possibilities. It feels as if a divine messenger has arrived to remind us that light follows darkness and that life holds surprises for those who nurture their flickering hopes. Before descending along treacherous paths and loose rocks, it was time to reflect on the experiences that made this journey worthwhile.

Nevertheless, it is important to remember that life gives everyone the opportunity to design it in a beautiful way. The obstacles that hinder our lives and restrict our innate capacity for happiness should not prevent us from adding memorable experiences to our lives. Therefore, we should not hesitate to challenge perceived realities and rediscover the joy that can be found in living life to the fullest. And one such experience awaits in the trekking expedition to Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.
