My Experience – Annapurna Base Camp Trek

Pokhara

Upon reaching Pokhara, I boarded a flight from Delhi to Kathmandu. Once I finished all the necessary procedures at the airport, I flagged down a taxi to take me to my hotel. The following day, I opted for a tourist bus to travel to Pokhara and promptly checked into a hotel upon arrival. After taking some time to rest, I ventured out to the nearby market to explore the city. Positioned by a lake, Pokhara offers an array of thrilling activities, lively entertainment areas, diverse dining options, and bustling markets. Additionally, it serves as the starting point for the Annapurna Base Camp.

To hike to Annapurna Base Camp, you must obtain a TIMs card and an ACAP Entry permit. These can be obtained in Pokhara, which is conveniently located near the tourist bus station. Whether you are trekking alone or with a group, it is essential to have both permits as they will be checked at different points along the trek. Remember to keep the permits dry and secure to protect them from rain.
Some trekking companies take care of the permits for you to save you the hassle of doing it yourself. This is what I did when I booked my trek.

I started my trekking journey in Pokhara and then took a public bus to Nayapul. If you are traveling alone, I recommend taking public transportation as it is more affordable. The picturesque route from Pokhara to Nayapul, with its winding bends and turns, takes about 1.5 hours. From Nayapul, I hiked uphill alongside the Burgundi River for a continuous 4-5 hours until I reached Tikhedhunga, a delightful little village with several lodges where you can spend the night.

After another early morning, I departed from the picturesque village of Ghandruk and began my hike towards Sinuwa. The captivating sunrise served as a wonderful beginning to my day. I followed the Modi River, ascending for a while until I reached a bridge that crossed over the Kimrong River. From there, I climbed a steep path that led me to the remarkable village of Chhomrong, inhabited by the Gurung people. The breathtaking beauty of nature in this area left me completely amazed.

As I journeyed through the hills near Chhomrong, I stumbled upon a picturesque trail that guided me to the Chomrong Khola River. The captivating sight of bamboo, rhododendron, and oak forests along this path is sure to captivate anyone who ventures here. Continuing my hike, I ascended to Sinuwa and spent the night there, reveling in the awe-inspiring views of the river and the vibrant green forests.

In the morning, I journeyed through the diverse plant and animal life on my path to Hinku Cave and eventually to Deurali. Starting from Sinuwa, I hiked until Bamboo, crossing the Kuldhigar and ascending a steep staircase to Dobhan, where I crossed a suspension bridge. Upon reaching Sinuwa, I stayed overnight in a lodge and rested after a challenging trek of 6-7 hours.

As the morning progressed, I continued my journey towards Annapurna Base Camp. The path from Deurali to Machapuchare is challenging and requires caution due to the risk of avalanches. Upon reaching Machapuchare Base Camp, the valley expands and offers breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks. After a few hours of climbing, I arrived at Annapurna Base Camp and marveled at the majestic mountains surrounding me. I spent the night at the camp, savoring my accomplishment in the highlands. In the middle of the night, I woke up to witness the awe-inspiring sight of the Milky Way galaxy illuminating the entire sky; it gave me chills!

down from the peak and begin my journey back to base camp.

till Bamboo, and followed the same route to Jhindu danda. On reaching Jhindu Danda, I settled my luggage and proceeded to relax in hot springs. Uh! It was so relaxing, it gave my sore muscles a soothing caress. I stayed overnight at Jhindu Danda. In the morning, I descended through the same route and reached Nayapul, from where I took a bus to Pokhara.

What is the optimal time of year to schedule your trek to ABC?

Annapurna Base Camp is accessible throughout the year apart from the late winters and monsoon season. Slippery and muddy monsoon trails, and winters trail laden with heavy snowfall makes both the season difficult to trek. The best season to trek this wonderland is during spring (April, May) and autumn (September to November). During this time the climate is not harsh, visibility is clear and the routes are uncomplicated and trouble-free.
