In recent times, trekking in Uttarakhand has evolved into more than just a thrilling activity. It has now become a favored choice for weekend escapes, extended hiking trips, river rafting, camping, mountaineering, ziplining, and other exhilarating adventures. Additionally, for many years, Uttarakhand has held great significance as a pilgrimage destination due to its association with the origin of the holy river Ganges, known as Gangotri. The Garhwal and Kumaon ranges, situated in the foothills of the renowned Himalayan peaks, offer the most promising treks.

Nanda Devi, standing at an elevation of 7,816 meters, is the second highest mountain in India and the highest mountain that is entirely within the country. It is situated in the Garhwal Himalayas and holds great significance as a holy site for numerous cultural festivals held annually. Additionally, this region in North India is adorned with several other peaks that exceed 7000 meters in height. Hence, when it comes to cultural, geographical, and historical significance, Uttarakhand emerges as a clear winner.

Keeping in mind a lot of factors that make a trek worthwhile, the best treks located in Uttarakhand are Roopkund Trek and Har Ki Doon Trek. These treks offer great views of the Himalayan peaks, challenge one’s trekking skills and endurance in controlled limits and are spread over a comfortable number of days to accommodate the best experiences without exhausting oneself completely.

However, the significant hurdles persist. The vast alpine meadows, fertile valleys, thick oak, deodar, and pine forests, high altitude lakes, moraines, ridges, and hanging glaciers, along with the majestic Himalayan peaks in the background, create a one-of-a-kind experience for trekkers in Uttarakhand. These remarkable characteristics make it an exhilarating adventure for trekkers from all walks of life.

The ideal period to embark on these treks is during the sunny summer months, specifically from April to June. It is advisable to steer clear of the monsoon season due to potential risks such as flash floods, landslides, and treacherous paths.

First one on this list is Roopkund Trek, The Mystery Lake:
