West Bengal, located between the Bay of Bengal and the Himalayas, provides numerous opportunities for trekking. The Sandakphu trek stands out as one of the most enjoyable treks in the Sikkim region. This trek, which reaches the highest point in West Bengal, offers a magnificent view of the Himalayas. As you embark on your journey from Chitrey to Sandakphu, the valley presents itself with stunning panoramic views of snow-capped mountains. Interestingly, you will cross the India-Nepal border multiple times during this trek since Sandakphu is situated between the two countries.

Sandakphu is a notable town in West Bengal due to its status as the highest peak in the region. What adds to its awe-inspiring nature is its summit, which offers a panoramic view of four out of the five highest peaks in the world: Mount Everest, Kangchenjunga, Lhotse, and Makalu.

How can one reach Sandakphu by trekking?

  1. I embarked on a journey from Chitre early in the morning following a satisfying breakfast. Chitre can be conveniently accessed by taxi from the railway station. I traversed picturesque pine forests and arrived at a viewpoint at a respectable elevation. Pausing for a brief 10-minute rest, I admired the town of Darjeeling below. Throughout the challenging hike, I maintained a strong and energetic pace while occasionally glancing at the majestic snow-capped peaks to my right in the north.I captured some photographs with a breathtaking backdrop, and then hiked downwards and crossed two small inclines. Eventually, I arrived at a magnificent viewpoint called Tonglu/Tumling, situated on the border between India and Nepal. I spent the night in this charming little town.
  2. Desiring to see the ravishing dawn, I woke up at the first light to watch the mesmerizing sun peeping out from Mount Kanchenjunga. Post a delightful breakfast, I left for my adventure and descended till the town of Joebari. From here, the trail was steep, and in around 1.5 hours, I reached border check-post in Gairibans. Post lunch, I proceeded with the trek for around 2.5 hours along a trail that was steep, and achieve the town of Kalapokhari.

  3. Don’t forget to see the reflection of the breath-taking sunrise from Kalapokhri Lake. After a delightful breakfast, I started the trek to Sandakphu, which was around 6 KM from Kalapokhri. Hiking constantly for around 2 KM, I halted at a place called Beekaybhanjan and took a break to breathe the fresh air.

  4. After relaxing in this peaceful location, I continued my journey towards the summit of Sandakphu. Since the ascent from this point would be steep, it is important to take regular breaks. The final path to the peak will be challenging and demanding, as the trail constantly changes direction. However, once you reach the top, the breathtaking view will make all the exhaustion from the difficult trek disappear. Take some time to admire the scenery from up here and don’t forget to capture it in photographs.
  5. In the morning, I enjoyed a cup of tea while admiring the breathtaking view of the entire sleeping Buddha-range from the mountain’s edge. Following a delicious breakfast, I gathered my belongings and began my journey towards Samandin Village. I explored the charming town before continuing on to Rammam. From there, I descended towards Srikhola and spent the night to recharge. The next morning, after a satisfying breakfast, I drove to NJP/Bagdogra airport. Your incredible trip will conclude here, and you will return home with cherished memories.

An alternative way to Sandakphu: The Motorable Road

There is also a motorable road, a 33 km track from Maneybhanjung to Sandakphu. The most convenient way to access the road is through a ride in the British-era land rover that adds drama to your journey. You can hire it easily for around 3000 INR. Since the roads are in bad shape, the ride can be quite bumpy. It is utilized by the locals, the carriage of merchandise/supplies, nearby neighborhood travelers and vacationers.

When embarking on a road trip, some people may experience discomfort due to acclimatization. While it may take approximately 7/8 hours to reach Sandakphu, individuals might encounter a sudden increase in altitude. Common symptoms include difficulty breathing, headaches, and feeling excessively cold. Therefore, we recommend considering trekking as an alternative or allowing your body sufficient time to adapt to the higher elevation.

Information on Permits, Guides and More

You do not need to worry about obtaining any permits for this trek. However, it is mandatory to have a personal guide (who charges approximately ₹800 per day) within the Singalila National Park, which starts after you pass Tumling and head towards Sandakphu. You can hire a guide from either the GTA Tourist Reception Centre or Mane Bhanjhang.
